Lynxes Match Reports run on

The programme for the Lynxes in 2025 was almost certainly the shortest ever.

Sadly, due to an organisational error, the School could not provide a date for the match against the Lynxes. For a number of reasons cricket at the School is going through a difficult phase and the absence of this traditional fixture has prompted a review of how the School will support Lynxes cricket in the future.

On Friday July 11 th the Lynxes played the Bully Boys at Sissinghurst C.C. The club provided an excellent wicket, a rock hard outfield and comfortable pavilion facilities as two full sides battled out the local derby match with a 35 overs a side format and a temperature of 30 degrees.

Gary Marshall, who will be leaving the Cranbrook area later in the year, won the toss and led the Lynxes into bat. Sadly, he “got a good one” in Will Huish’s second over and was forced to return to the pavilion unusually early. His fellow opener, James Morgan, who has been playing a high standard of cricket at Bath University, proceeded to attack all the bowlers with exciting drives and pull shots, eventually carrying his bat for 190 not out. This is the highest ever score by a Lynxes batsman, exceeding the four previous scores of 140 runs or more recorded by Gary Marshall (141). John Furminger (141 *), Finn Hulbert (146) and Paul Brenchley (149)

He was ably supported by Rory Cummings, who scored 40 and his brother David, who scored 15 not out as Lynxes reached a total of 258 runs off their 35 overs.

Several Lynxes members featured in the Bully Boys bowling attack. Owen Dearn took 3 wickets for 52 and Will Huish 1 for 51 off their allocated 7 overs . They were supported by the wicket-less but economical spinner, Ed May, and seamers, Joe Schindler and Clem O’Collins.

An excellent lunch was provided by Wendy Larkins. The (non-profit) bar prices were much appreciated.

The Bully Boys began patiently and after 10 overs the score was only 51 runs. The reply reached 150 runs after 20 overs and 218 after 30 overs. A spectacular day’s cricket ended with the Bully Boys winning in the 33 rd over.

Matthew G-Rickford had led the charge with a fine innings of 102 (retired). Ed May scored 51 not out, Sam Stibbs 27 and Joe Schindler 17 not out.

The Lynxes tried 10 bowlers in all, with Rory Cummings, Benjie Bignell and Tom Laver taking just one wicket each.

It was just the sort of match that brings O.C.s back to Cranbrook to share good cricket with old friends and it is hoped that such matches can be enjoyed for several years ahead.

The following awards will be added to the Lynxes records:

  • Andrew Bond Batting Cup - James Morgan (190 runs)
  • David Winterbottom Bowling Cup – Rory Cummings (1 wicket for 6 runs)
  • Tim Barlow Fielding Cup – Not awarded
