In a remarkable display of altruism and community service, Hussam Lone, a 32-year-old NHS dentist and proud alumnus of Cranbrook School, is making a significant impact on London's homeless population. His initiative to provide free dental care has not only brought relief to many but also highlights the struggles of the less fortunate amidst the current economic hardships.

Hussam's journey into this selfless service started with a puzzling observation. "It's the fifth day, and it's the same guy who's kept coming late and I ask him what's going on," Hussam shared with Metro. The patient's response revealed a harsh reality: a daily trek from north London, battling against time and distance, only to find the clinic closed upon arrival. The reason? A desperate bid to retain a sleeping spot under an archway. This encounter profoundly impacted Hussam, opening his eyes to the plight of many homeless individuals.

Determined to make a difference, Hussam began visiting homeless shelters across London and nearby areas, including the Maidstone Churches Winter Shelter in Kent, and shelters in Bromley, Thornton Heath and Croydon. His efforts go beyond basic dental care; Hussam also provides oral hygiene products and even pizza, sometimes funded from his own pocket. "I'll go to a homeless shelter to give out a bag of toothpaste and sit there for an hour and a half, and anyone who wants to ask a question about anything they're worried about," he says. "I'll add them to the list and see them at one of the practices to get them out of pain or help them."

Hussam's commitment expanded during the lockdown, where he set up an email address for anonymous dental advice, aiming to make dentistry more accessible. His first volunteering experience dates back to his post-graduation days, inspired to help his brother at a local Crisis shelter during Christmas. Witnessing the shelter's struggle to find volunteers for a van offering free dental treatments solidified his resolve to contribute.

The cost-of-living crisis has only intensified the need for such services. Hussam notes a shift in the demographic seeking help, with more people unable to afford basic dental care. He reflects on the alarming decisions people have to make between essentials like food, heating, and dental health. "That £70 is, for an average person now, not easy to afford," Hussam points out, underlining the grim choices many face.

Hussam's experience at the shelters has been eye-opening, encountering cases like a patient with oral cancer due to chewing tobacco. "My heart sank," he recalls. The lack of a registered address complicates access to healthcare for many homeless individuals, a barrier Hussam strives to overcome. Despite the enormity of challenges in the dentistry sector and the wider health system, Hussam remains committed to his cause. He dreams of developing a mobile app for free, quick and anonymous dental advice, a testament to his dedication to helping those in need.

We all should celebrate the compassionate efforts of Hussam Lone, whose work not only alleviates physical pain but also brings smiles and hope to many. His story is a powerful reminder of the impact one individual can make in the lives of others, especially in trying times.
