J Gavin Worsfold MA JP died peacefully in hospital on May 2nd aged 92. Beloved husband for 69 years of Diana. Proud and loving father of Jeremy, Roderick, Crispin and Susanna, much loved grandfather of 11 and great grandfather of 9.

Gavin Peck who taught History at the school (1955 - 1970), was one of the younger members of staff when he arrived at Cranbrook and was much liked. The following excerpt was taken from the 1970 edition of Lynx magazine:

Now that the Vice Master leaves, only five members of Staff remain who have seen out the ’60’s. Mr. Peck’s departure was a question of timing, and has hung, in Damocletian fashion, over us for several years. No man is irreplaceable, but some approach nearer that status than others, and none near than Gavin Peck. First, we congratulate him on his appointment as Headmaster of The King’s School, Pontefract, and wish him and his family excellently well, and second we note that he is the first assistant master from Cranbrook for over 100 years to move direct to Headship. How can one attempt to summarise in a few brief lines someone so well armed at all points? The phrase that springs first to mind is that used by Sir Edward Boyle on Speech Day, 1968, when he referred to ‘the continuing validity of a University discipline.’ It speaks of striving and to speaks of standards, and, thus, it speaks of Gavin Peck. In fifteen years this man of highest integrity touched the life of Cranbrook at more points than we at first may recall; and his touch was always on the vital part. History popped out of its book and lived with him; his walks through the centuries, touching the bricks and mortar on the way, sent an increasing number striding purposefully toward University. As a practicing politician with a fine local reputation, one might have expected that he could, by force of personality, have captured in the Liberal interest the minds of his pupils.  Instead his sense of impartiality restrained him, and brought him recognition as a dedicated Justice of the Peace. He became, therefore, Vice Master on merit, and, though much younger than many of his colleagues, brought such unity and purpose to the Common Room that the School was able, despite the rapid changes, to go forward with assurance bred of common purpose. Gavin Peck worked quietly and he got results. He always brought home the bacon, whether physically running his pig scheme, or in the long term running the Junior Colts: the harbinger of success at rugger was always to be discerned at that level. The he was, in his last two years, Housemaster of Scott House, beholden to that large and demanding family as well as to his own - and no-one at Cranbrook was known as a better family man - reveals yet more of his stature and underlines still further how much we will miss him. Cranbrook has never had a finer servant.
